Soft drinks in Mexico.- Mexico is number one worldwide consumer of soft drinks as shown in several publications.

It is calculated that Mexicans consume around 163 liters of soft drinks a year, a worrying data considering that soft drinks are believed to be the main responsible for obesity. Many are the voices that claim the introduction of a special tax on soft drinks, which could reduce soft drinks consumption, a measure that can be beneficial for the Mexican health system.

Last year, the money spent due to obesity related diseases reached alarming limits while it is expected that in six years Mexico will spend around 14,000 million of U.S. dollars (around 10,500 Euros) in treating obesity related disorders.
